A Brief Organizational History

Student Solutions, Inc. is the brainchild of Kumar Sathy, an author and educational entrepreneur. As an undergraduate student, Sathy started volunteering with America Reads, spending his afternoons helping struggling grade readers at a local elementary school.  In the summer of 2000, he volunteered with the Women Empowerment Program and Primary Education Program of the Auroville Village Action Group in Auroville, India.  The combination of experiences working with children at home and abroad led him to develop a fascination with the field of public education and he took particular interest in the study of memory, cognition, and brain-based education, which led to his decision to major in Biology and Psychology.

Sathy was selected to join Teach for America, a highly-selective national teaching corps, and was placed as a second grade teacher in Atlanta, Georgia. In Atlanta, Sathy experienced difficulty finding high-interest reading material for his struggling readers. He began writing stories for them without telling them he was the author, something he continued to do until his final year in the classroom at E.L. Connally Elementary School.

In 2005, after receiving several teaching awards and grants, Sathy consulted on the development of a nonprofit agency in Chapel Hill, NC.  Initially going into Title 1 schools to help elementary students write and publish novellas about personal struggles in their lives, the organization determined that the project was not scalable or replicable.  Sathy had been taking classes toward his Masters in School Administration at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and took a year to serve as an Assistant Principal in order to satisfy the administrative internship requirement of the program and K-12 principal's certification).  Sathy  had been put in charge of ordering books for the school and noticed, once again, the difficulty of finding standards-based, high-interest, low-level books for students. He pitched the idea of a new, innovative resource to the nonprofit's board and on February 12, 2009, with the help of several freelance curriculum specialists, editors, and illustrators, Attack of the Chicken Nugget Man: A North Carolina EOG Adventure, was published under the Student Solutions imprint.

Three additional versions of the books were published in October 2009: A California CST Adventure, A New York Test Prep Adventure, and A Georgia CRCT Adventure.  A National Test Prep version is scheduled for publication on January 4, 2010. The second volume in the series, aimed at assisting fourth grade students, is currently in development. The organization is currently developing creative homework, lesson plans, and test prep resources for parents, teachers, and students. Book sales and contributions from private foundations are the organization's primary sources of revenue.
